Safety

This service only works if both sides feel safe. Here is exactly how we protect the people on both ends of every letter.

Verified adults only

Every penpal is a real person aged 18 or over whose identity we have verified, and who has given consent to appear on this site, to have their photos shown, and to write letters. Customers must also be 18 or over. We do not publish AI-generated or fictional people.

Private address routing

Your home address is never given to your penpal, and your penpal's home address is never given to you. All physical mail passes through our operations office:

Mutual respect

Correspondence works when both people feel comfortable. Sexual content, pressure of any kind after it has been declined, and requests for money or gifts are not allowed from either side. Where a correspondence goes beyond that is for the two people writing to decide, at their own pace.

No private contact exchange

Letters and online replies must not contain LINE IDs, WhatsApp, Instagram, Telegram, phone numbers, personal email addresses or home addresses. Correspondence is reviewed by our team before it is passed on, and anything that breaks this rule is held for review.

Meeting in person

My Japanese Penpal does not arrange, supervise, guarantee or take responsibility for in-person meetings, and we do not offer a meet-up feature. What two adults decide to do of their own free will is their own business — it simply happens outside this service, where we can no longer help either of you.

Reporting

Customers and writers can both report a problem at any time. Reports go to our operations team, who can immediately place a correspondence on hold — stopping replies from being passed on and stopping any pending letter from being mailed — and can issue warnings, suspend or terminate an account.

You can file a report from your account, or contact us through the contact form.

If something is urgent

If you believe someone is in immediate danger, contact your local emergency services first. We are a correspondence service and cannot provide emergency assistance.
