Learn Japanese with a penpal who writes to you by hand

Textbook Japanese and real Japanese are different languages. A monthly handwritten letter from someone living an ordinary life in Japan gives you the second one — natural phrasing, seasonal expressions, and handwriting you learn to read because you want to know what it says.

Choose your language level

When you sign up you choose English, Japanese, or bilingual letters. Bilingual is the usual choice for learners: the letter is written in Japanese with an English version alongside, so you can read as much as you can manage and check yourself against the rest.

Reading handwriting is the skill nobody teaches

Apps show you printed type. Real Japanese arrives handwritten, and learning to read it is one of the fastest ways to feel genuinely comfortable with the language. A letter a month gives you steady, low-pressure practice at exactly that.

Writing back at your own pace

You can reply in English, in Japanese, or in a mixture. Your writer will understand either way, and many learners start with one Japanese paragraph and add more each month. There's no correction service and no grades — just a person who is genuinely pleased you tried.

Slow, but it sticks

A month is enough time to look up what you didn't recognise and to draft a reply properly. Learners often find they remember the vocabulary from a letter far longer than the vocabulary from an app, because it arrived attached to someone's actual life.
